Mobius Team

The core team at Mobius includes international and local technical staff. Their hard work and exceptional talent continue to bring us closer to our vision of a truly mobile Africa.

As well as the core team, many other people work tirelessly in the construction of our prototype vehicles. This wider team includes extra mechanics and welders, electricians, panel beaters, painters, glass cutters, fabric tailors and expert consultants. More broadly, the range of talent we utilise in Kenya shows the domestic willingness and capability to produce vehicles like this commercially in Africa. Founder & CEO

Joel Jackson

Mobius is led by Joel Jackson, an internationally awarded entrepreneur. Before Mobius, Joel worked on business strategy with an acclaimed microforestry social enterprise in rural Kenya. It was here that he first experienced the challenges facing millions of people throughout the continent without access to appropriate forms of transport. Joel also worked as a management consultant, advising top Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies across Europe and North America. He is the recipient of both the TED Global fellowship and Echoing Green fellowship and has presented Mobius' vision at several worldwide forums, including the UN. Joel is a graduate of Imperial College with a first class honours degree in Computer Science.

Procurement & Regulatory Manager

Edward Mwangi

Edward Mwangi is the Procurement and Regulatory Manager and brings significant experience in supply chain management. Edward has worked with General Motors East Africa as head of parts operations and previously as senior buyer. He has also worked with Autosueco Kenya where he led the parts operations as well as championing supply chain improvements for the local Volvo dealer. Edward is a post graduate diploma holder and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supplies (UK). He has a Bachelor's degree in Commerce - Marketing Option from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Production Manager

Augustine Juma

Augustine Juma is the Production Manager and brings significant experience in Automotive CKD assembly. Augustine has worked with General Motors East Africa as manager in-charge of Product Planning and Quality, Manufacturing Engineering and Plant Maintenance. He has also worked with Nestle Kenya as the Factory Engineering Manager where he led the factory engineering team. Augustine holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Aftersales Manager

David Kuria

David joins Mobius from CMC Motors Group where he headed the New Vehicles, Parts and Service operations in the eastern and parts of the north eastern region of Kenya. In this role, he also oversaw the efficient running of two fuel stations for Total Kenya Ltd. Leading a team of 42 staff, he helped transform the Meru branch from a loss making entity to a profitable and vibrant unit. Previously he worked for Reliance Ltd, an appointed distributor of the Nation Media Group, where he established and managed a skeletal publication distribution infrastructure. He holds a Bachelor of Science (cumlaude) in Automotive Technology degree from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.

Sales Manager

Sam Mbugua

Sam Mbugua joined Mobius as our Sales Manager, responsible for overall sales planning and execution. Previously Sam ran sales and marketing at Subaru Kenya. Before this, he held senior sales positions in a number of major telecoms companies within the region. Sam holds a Bachelors of Arts degree from Egerton University in Kenya, plus certification in various sales related fields.

Supply Chain Manager

Nick Singer

Nick Singer leads Supply Chain at Mobius. Over several years working in the Strategy & Operations practice at Deloitte Consulting, Nick led various lean process improvement project threads with global Fortune 500 clients, generating over $100m in efficiency savings. He has also worked with Technoserve in Swaziland where he developed and implemented cost reduction and market linkage projects for rural farmers. Nick has a double major bachelors degree from the University of Maryland in Marketing and Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain Management (Summa Cum Laude) where he was awarded the Hinman Entrepreneurship Student of the Year prize.

Design Engineer

Bastian Kindereit

Bastian is responsible for overall chassis systems at Mobius. Prior to joining Mobius, Bastian worked in aerospace and defence at Raytheon, where he was an engineer on airborne radar systems. Bastian has a primary masters in Mechanics and Structures from University of California at Los Angeles and a secondary masters in International Security at Sciences Po in Paris, France. Bastian received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California.

Automotive Designer

Jerome Arul

Jerome Arul leads Automotive Design at Mobius. Jerome has previously worked on a broad scope of design projects with ESPN and Kimberly Clark, as well as some social development projects with MIT and Waterwalla, a renowned clean water technology start-up. As a lieutenant in the Singapore Armed Forces, his DyS3 role encompassed managing operations of locally developed tanks, plant equipment and support vehicles of an Armoured Engineer battalion. Having worked on numerous vehicle design-builds in college, most notably Brown University's Formula SAE team, he brings to the team significant knowledge of composites, digital fabrication and manufacturing. Jerome is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a bachelor's in Industrial Design.

Mechanical Engineer

Viroop Narla

Viroop joined Mobius as a Mechanical Engineer in August 2012. Before joining Mobius, he worked at General Motors, East Africa and the Automotive Division of Mahindra & Mahindra in Mumbai, India. He is a graduate of Anna University in Chennai, India with an Automotive Engineering Degree. Viroop was also the team captain of his university's Formula SAE team in his senior year.

Mechanical Engineer

Tom Ochieng

Tom is a Mechanical Engineer with Mobius who has a passionate interest in developing culturally sustainable solutions to solve real world problems. Over the years he has been focusing on digital fabrication brought about by Fablabs around the world. Tom brings a lot of experience in fabrication and rapid prototyping gained over the years working with numerous social enterprise organizations such as Sanergy and re:char. Tom is a graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.

Electrical Engineer

Gihan Perera

Gihan Perera is an Electrical Engineer, responsible for electrical system integration and development within the Mobius vehicles. Prior to being promoted to Electrical Engineer, Gihan completed an Engineer Fellowship at Mobius. He has also previously worked at Associated Motors in Kenya in mechanical repair. Gihan studied Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham.

Operations Officer

Mary Lugano

Mary Lugano joined Mobius Motors as our Operations Officer in early 2012. Before joining Mobius, Mary worked at Development Impact Consulting as a civil engineering assistant on an IFC urban sanitation market analysis feasibility study. She also worked at the Coast Water Services Board and at Mangat IBP & Partners under the Water and Sanitation Service Improvement Project funded by the World Bank. Mary has teaching experience through Teach for America, where she taught middle and high school science in Houston, Texas. She is a graduate of the University of Florida with a BSci (Cum Laude) in Civil Engineering and a BA (Cum Laude) in Natural Science with a concentration in Physics.

Senior Sales Officer

Martin Mathenge

Martin works as a Senior Sales Officer. He brings more than 5 years experience in the field of sales management. Before joining Mobius, Martin worked with various companies in the motor industry, among them Toyotsu Auto Mart (Toyota Kenya) as a Sales and Logistic Officer. He also worked with CMC Motors as a sales representative and with SDV Transami (Southern Sudan, Uganda and Rwanda) as a territory sales officer. He holds a diploma in Sales Management from Egerton University, Diploma in Computer hardware and Software maintenance and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (BA) from Daystar University.

Sales Officer

Margaret Ndirangu

Margaret joined Mobius in October 2012 as a Sales Officer. Before joining Mobius, Margaret worked as a Sales Executive at Car & General in Nairobi for several years. Margaret also worked in sales at Osju Investments and ACNielsen. She is a graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and Economics.

Administration Officer

Beryl Odindo

Beryl Odindo joined Mobius as our Administration Officer, responsible for office operations and administrative duties. Before joining Mobius, Beryl worked in various operations and planning departments at Kenya Airways, Kenya's national airline. In addition to her work at Mobius, she is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Community Development at the University of South Africa.

Financial Officer

Sam Muthui

Sam Muthui runs financial control at Mobius in Kenya. Before joining Mobius Sam worked as a Financial Controller at the Commercial Bank of Africa, an account with one of Kenya's top audit firms during the country's 2009 census and as an Analyst at Kenya Securities during Kenya Re and Safaricom IPOs. Sam is a graduate of the University of Nairob with a BSci in Statistics and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is also a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).

Lead Mechanic

Kazungu Mwaringa

As Lead Mechanic at Mobius, Kazungu works on all areas of the vehicle build from engine mounting to brake system fitting to wheel alignment. He also provides important technical advice to the team and supports systems procurement. Kazungu trained as a mechanic in Mombasa and has completed a number of technical courses as well as gaining KCSE qualifications. He has extensive mechanical experience throughout coastal Kenya where he has worked for over five years in a number of garages. Kazungu is currently acquiring more advanced technical skills in MIG welding and Oxy-Acetylene cutting which he is able to apply on subsequent prototype builds.

Lead Welder

Said Tsuma

As an expert Welder, Said plays a critical role in the fabrication and weld of the vehicle frame and all connected system mountings. This includes tube bending, tube notching and frame geometry as well as weld quality testing and assurance. Said has a degree in Advanced Welding from the Taita Institute, Kenya where he mastered MIG, Arc and Oxy-Acetylene welding. He has also worked as a senior welder for over twelve years at a top engineering firm in Mombasa during which time he refined his welding technique on various automotive projects including the construction of a number of racing dune buggies.

Welder

Ibrahim Chale

Ibrahim Chale works as a welder at Mobius. Before joining Mobius he operated his own mechanic garage in Voi town for five years. Ibrahim previously worked at Collette Motors in Diani, Ukunda, for six years, where he gained experience in panel beating, MIG welding and vehicle body building. Ibrahim has a degree in Advanced Welding from the Taita Institute. He played an integral role in the fabrication and weld of the Mobius Two prototype.
