Our Innovation
Mobius One is our first prototype vehicle and represents a major step towards a safe, functional and affordable form of transport for the African market.
Our innovation is a new approach to vehicle design, significantly reducing the amount of vehicle body by using a more cost effective steel tubular frame while still using off-the-shelf parts. In contrast to the standard car design methodology of western manufacturers who place emphasis on safety and comfort (from a developed perspective), our approach shifts the emphasis towards safety, functionality and affordability – the key purchase criteria for the demographic we aim to serve.
Safe
Transport
Just like any automotive business, safety is our paramount concern. As well as reducing unnecessary weight and cost, our tubular steel monocoque frame effectively creates an in-built vehicle roll-cage which ensures a high degree of structural rigidity. Indeed, this design approach is similar to the proven frames of sand rails which are typically used as high performance racing vehicles where structural strength is critical.
Mobius One also incorporates a front and rear crumple zone to absorb impact forces in the event of a collision. Seat belts are fitted as standard on all five seats as well as neck support head rests. The brake system features independent front and rear brakes to provide necessary redundancy in the result of any mechanical failure.
Functional
Transport
Mobius One is designed explicitly for the needs of the African consumer. In areas plagued by degraded roads, good suspension and vehicle handling are essential to maximise terrain coverage and access more remote areas. Although most 4x4s perform well in these environments, their high price is prohibitively expensive for all but the most wealthy of African customers. While smaller, cheaper vehicles are simply unable to handle the terrain common in many areas across Africa.
We also aim to maximise storage by incorporating a large boot and roof rack area. Many people in rural areas such as farmers often need to transport large or heavy loads long distances to access local markets, this vehicle is designed to provide the necessary loading capacity.
Mobius One also includes passenger capacity for 5 people and canvas windows to fully waterproof the vehicle. By focusing on key aspects of functionality we provide an appropriate form of transport at a price that many more people can afford.
Affordable
Transport
We aim to introduce a new kind of vehicle to Africa, fit for the needs of the majority of its most disadvantaged people. In order to achieve this vision, our vehicles must be significantly cheaper than existing 4x4s cars which offer the most similar level of comparative functionality needed in these areas. Thus we aim to produce a vehicle that can be sold at the same price as an auto rickshaw with the key functionality of an off-road car.
To minimise costs, Mobius One pioneers the use of a tubular steel frame to produce commerically viable vehicles. By eliminating the full body frames used in most vehicles, we are able to drastically reduce the production cost whilst still maintaining the core functionality of a car. Furthermore, by using standard off-the-shelf parts we maintain the flexibility to invest in key aspects of functionality (such as suspension and handling) whilst still minimising costs by using the most cost effective parts available.
